144

Paper, card, found objects, acrylic paint, ink, rubbing stick, pencil.
144 sheets, each 12”x12”

I set myself a task: one hundred and forty four consecutive days of art making. Each day I made at least one 12”x12” square.

Time is counted out in twelves. Twelve months in a year; twice twelve gives us our twenty-four hour day. It seemed natural to make a piece in which time would play a role. Twelve twelves are 144. One hundred forty four days of art.

Some of the squares were made in my studio. Many of them were made on the run. I made art with the things I found around me. I made collages, drawings, and rubbings. I explored my surroundings and documented the things I saw. The square format was itself a space to explore.

The work is a collection. Its antecedents are artist’s sketchbooks, handwritten letters, herbaria, maps, documents of all kinds.

As I made a piece at her kitchen table, a friend of mine said, "You’re committing art in my kitchen."

The goal is to commit art all the time.

Below are 20 pieces selected from the series.
