The Modern Manuscript Book

The hand-made, hand-written book is an object with a long history. We are accustomed to the printed page, which is based on certain techniques and assumptions. In this workshop, we explore the unique logic of the manuscript book.

Looking at medieval European manuscripts, we examine how the physical book takes form. We pay careful attention to the medieval scribes’ methods of work, pricking the pages, scoring lines with a sharp tool, and working spontaneously and directly on the page. We also look at contemporary painting and think about how painters show their methods of work.

Our aim is to move away from mechanical, industrial notions of the book, and explore the book as an expressive, hand-made space. The hand-made book is neither clean nor mechanical. It is a more organic thing. Each stage of work leaves its mark on the page; far from being imperfections, these marks give texture and shape to the page.
