The Art of the Rubbing

Making rubbings is an excellent way to explore your environment.

Rubbings can be treated as documentation—as when one rubs a tombstone to record an inscription. They can also be used as a vehicle for drawing, using textures and shapes to create new patterns; or varying the pressure of the hand to achieve areas of dark and light.

The act of making a rubbing can also be an act of remembrance — think of the way people take rubbings of the names on Washington’s Viet Nam memorial.

In this workshop, we learn basic techniques for making rubbings using different tools and various papers.

Participants bind their rubbings together in a simple sewn book format to create an album of their work.
