AT THE NEW YORK SOCIETY OF SCRIBES IN OCTOBER 2004:

Introduction to Uncials
The uncial hand is one of the most satisfying and versatile scripts in the calligraphy repertoire. In this short course, we explore the many varieties of uncial writing. It can be very simple, or wonderfully complex, and has a texture and rhythm all its own. Whether you are a beginner, learning to use the edged pen for the first time, or an experienced scribe wanting to add a script to your list, this will be a valuable learning opportunity.
The course has been designed as a series of Saturday sessions, to give students a chance to practice the hand in between classes. Each session will introduce new varieties of uncial. We will look at historic and contemporary examples of uncial script, and use the hand to write short quotations.
Three Saturdays: October 2, 9, 16
School of Visual Arts Annex
214 East 21st Street
9:30am to 4:30pm

Below is a list of standard workshops that I offer. Please contact me to schecule any of these workshops.

I’ve been teaching workshops and short courses for the last fifteen years.
In addition to basic courses on lettering and letter design, my workshops are opportunities to explore the making of documents of many kinds. I bring a design ethos to many of my workshops, rather than focusing narrowly on technique.

These workshops are adapted to suit different communities. I work with both adults and children, and people of all levels of artistic skill. I particularly enjoy working with people who have little artistic background.
